The University of Missouri-Columbia Colleges of Engineering and Education, in collaboration with three Missouri school districts (Columbia, Glasgow, & Hallsville), engineering businesses, and the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education invite teachers to apply to Integrating Science Industrial Technology and Engineering (InSITE), a National Science Foundation-funded project to support the development of science and mathematics concepts through engineering design. The InSITE Project funds school teams consisting of a science or math teacher and an industrial technology teacher (from the same building/school in grades four through nine) and one engineering graduate student Fellow. Throughout the school year, the Fellow collaborates with teachers outside of class (5 hrs/week) to plan instruction and support for a Science/Engineering Club. Additionally, the Fellow works with teachers in the classroom (10 hrs/week) to help students understand underlying mathematics and science principles and implement inquiry-based instructional strategies. Teachers and Fellows participate in a 4-day InSITE Institute at MU, July 30 through August 2, 2007 . The InSITE Institute focuses on engineering design principles and effective instructional practices. Drs. Nair and Lannin, Sara Torres, Science Coordinator for the Columbia Public Schools, and David Heath, Practical Arts Coordinator for Columbia Public Schools lead the Institute, assisted by two College of Education graduate students with middle and/or secondary teaching experience. Teachers and Fellows attend follow-up sessions every 6 weeks throughout the school year.
