MidMO ROBOT LEGO CAMP
Spring, 2008

The InSITE (Incorporating Science, Industrial Technology, and Engineering) Team at the University of Missouri¨CColumbia supported by a National Science Foundation grant brings engineering graduate students into the classroom in surrounding schools in Mid-Missouri.

The objective of the InSITE LEGO Robotics Camp is to increase children's interests in science, industrial technology, and engineering through innovative, hands-on engineering design projects designed to challenge students in a fun and educational approach. The camp will focus on learning about LEGO Engineering by building and programming robots using LEGO Mindstorms in fun, hands-on, real-world problem solving activities. Students of all abilities are welcome to learn by working in small groups to design and build working robots and program it to perform tasks.

Instructors will be graduate and undergraduate students in engineering at the University with professional experience in robotics. Graduate fellows at the University of Missouri-Columbia come from backgrounds in Electrical/Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Biological Engineering and most are currently working on their PhD degrees.

We have also chosen to use the LEGO Mindstorms Robotics Kits as a tool to base hands-on engineering design projects for lessons to teach engineering concepts. These lessons are fun and provide the students with experience implementing the engineering design process.

Although the program is educational, we want the children to enjoy themselves and have fun. Activity themes are designed to be of interest to the age group and gender(s) that attend the camp. Activities are structured to encourage students to make connections with other campers.

The ratio of staff to campers is very low so that we may offer each student individual attention.
